Important notice for those traveling to Costa Rica over the next 30 days. Today the government announced a travel ban Costa Rica has declared a State of Emergency in response to the coronavirus pandemic, President Carlos Alvarado announced Monday afternoon. The country will shut down its borders to foreigners and non-residents starting 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18. The restriction applies to the country’s ports of entry via land, air or sea.
Starting immediately, citizens and residents who arrive in Costa Rica will be subjected to a mandatory 14-day quarantine, President Alvarado said. The travel restrictions will continue through at least Sunday, April 12 at 11:59 p.m.Travelers with a layover in Costa Rica will still be allowed to transit through Costa Rica’s airports. Costa Rica is not enforcing any restrictions on leaving the country, though Health Minister Daniel Salas warned strongly against non-critical travel. “Tourists who are in the country can leave Costa Rica in orderly fashion,” said Tourism Minister María Amalia Revelo. “Of course, we know airlines will reduce significantly the number of flights they offer to Costa Rica.”

Obviously today’s ban is important for any travelers coming down over the next 2-3 weeks. Important that travelers monitor and look for updates over the next 30 days. For those with reservations or plans farther out I encourage you to not make any drastic changes and simply review traveling conditions 15-30 days prior to your reservation before making a final decision.
What You Need to Know – Costa Rica Property Owners Who Own Vacation Rentals
The vacation rental market was already seeing a high amount of cancellations prior to todays travel ban. I anticipate this having a signficant impact on bookings over then next 30-90 days. I encourage owners to adjust by offering reduced rates and flexible refund policies during this time. More importantly it is important to brace for lower rental income over this time and plan accordingly.
What You Need to Know – Costa Rica Property Sellers
Financial market conditions along with travel restrictions and overall uncertainty is going to make sales challenging over the next 90 days. If your property is on the market and you were already priced aggressively I’d encourage to hold and simply re-evaluate in 2-3 months.
